On Campus Employment and Social Security Number

On Campus Employment


1. F and J visa holders sponsored by UW - Whitewater may work on campus in the service of students up to 20 hours per week (full time during summer, winter, and fall  breaks)

2. Working at another UW university is not considered on-campus employment.  You must apply for CPT.

3. You must first find an on campus position.   Positions are often posted on Handshake at: https://uww.joinhandshake.com/login   Please note that Handshake contains both on campus and off campus positions.

4. Students may not engage in on campus employment after their program end date on their I-20 or DS-2019.

5. Illegal employment results in termination of I-20 / DS-2019, removal from the United States, and potential denial of future entry to the United State.  Please contact ISSS if you have questions

6. Your employer will work with the Human Resources office on employment paperwork.  ISSS is not involved in hiring paperwork (except Social Security Verification after you are hired).  If you have questions about the hiring process, please contact Human Resources or your employer.

Social Security Number (SSN)

1.  If you have a social security number already, use your current SSN.  You should only have one SSN in your lifetime.

2. The only way to obtain an SSN is through a job offer.

3. To obtain an SSN:
A. Obtain an offer for on campus employment that meets your visa rules

B. Complete paperwork with the hiring department and the Human Resources office.   This may be the UW - Whitewater Human  Resources office or the dining services human resources office.

C. Once you complete the hiring process, the Human Resources office will send a form to ISSS of the job offer.  ISSS will evaluate and sign the form if you are eligible to take the position based on your visa rules

D. Once ISSS signed the form, it will be uploaded into WISP and an email will be sent to you to obtain it

E. You will download and sign the form.  You will also review the SSN instructions and go to the SSN office to apply for your SSN.  We recommend the Janesville office.   Contact the SSN office if you have questions.

F. Follow Human Resources instructions about providing your SSN to them

G. You are responsible for transportation to / from the social security office.  You may check the Warhawk Shuttle information at:  https://www.uww.edu/adminaffairs/fpm/shuttle

 - questions about the hiring process should be directed to the person hiring you or Human Resources
 - questions about the social security number application should be directed to the social security office
 - questions about taxes should be directed to your tax professional
 - ISSS's signs the job offer to acknowledge it meets on-campus employment requirements and is allowed by your visa.  ISSS is not involved in the hiring process or the SSN application process.  ISSS will refer you to Human Resources or Social Security Office, etc. as appropriate.
