Request to Transfer SEVIS Record (I-20) to Another Institution

Eligibility for a SEVIS Record Transfer


-You must be maintaining F-1 status.
-If you have already graduated, you must be within your 60-day grace period.
-The start date at your new school must be within five months of your "transfer out" date in SEVIS or your program completion date, whichever is earlier.
-For students authorized for post-completion OPT, the new program start date must be within five months of your SEVIS "transfer out" date or the end of the OPT authorization, whichever is earlier. OPT ends on the transfer release date.


Transfer Out Steps

Step One: Be admitted to another SEVP-certified institution.

Step Two: Choose a SEVIS release date: Choosing an appropriate date is critical.
     - You may no longer study, be employed, participate in OPT, or other UW - Whitewater benefits after your transfer out date.
     - You may not begin studies, employment, or take advantage of any benefits of your new institution under after your transfer out date.
     - If you have questions about choosing a transfer out date, please contact ISSS at international@uww.edu

Step Three: Complete and Submit Transfer Out application requirements for F-1 Student. Include your acceptance letter and any SEVIS transfer instructions on this application.

Step Four: ISSS will transfer your SEVIS record (I-20) to your new institution on the SEVIS release date.

Step Five:  Your new institution can create a transfer-pending I-20 for you after they accept your SEVIS transfer.    Check with your new institution for information regarding required next steps for admitted students and orientation
